The Initiative Against Despair

The sense of the irrepairable is apt to make us despair. Whenever we realize that we have not done that which we had a magnificent opportunity of doing...then we are apt to sink into despair.

In Matthew 26:46, Jesus finds his disciples asleep when they had been asked to stay awake, watching and praying. Their spirit's were willing...but their flesh was weak. But in grace, Jesus comes and says..."Sleep on now, that opportunity is lost forever, you cannot alter it, but arise and go to the next thing" (paraphrased).

Let the past sleep, but let it sleep on the bosom of Christ, and go out into the irresistable future with Him.

Trust Him absolutely and pray on the ground of His redemption. Never let the sense of failure corrupt your new action.

This excerpt from Oswald Chambers Devotional, My Utomost for His Highest, has been such an encouragement to me as I walk through Motherhood...making mistakes each day. Regretting my words, the volume of my voice, the unwise use of my time. In Christ, we have new hope and mercy each day. We can't change the past...but as God's children, we can rest knowing that even our past mistakes are in His capable hands...to work all thing together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. We can then press on, choosing to obey, and look to the next right thing He is calling us to do.

"God does not give us overcoming life, He gives us life as we overcome." --Oswald Chambers

  2. that's beatiful, Jonie. What a reminder this is as I begin my day! I am learning, too, how to not lose "steam" in the never-ending to-do's. Doing the "next thing" as described in Matthew 26:46 will help me stay on track. Love this post. thanks!
